Never fool around with drugs - Braganza

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (28 April) -- Never fool around with drugs, some things in life need not be experienced, said Atty. Eliseo Braganza, action officer of City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte who is closely coordinating with the Philippine Mental Health Association, the Philippine Druge Enforcement Agency (PDEAD) and other organizations which are handling programs on the fight against prohibited drugs.

"While there are those that you need to personally experience in your own personal life, never experience the use of prohibited drugs because it is dangerous", he said.

Atty. Braganza said "don't feel how drugs would destroy your mind and body" adding that Mayor Duterte is really hard on his campaign against use of illegal drugs.

The city government and the PMHA chaired by Nanay Soling Duterte (mother of the Mayor) are advocating correct information on prohibited drugs and its deadly effects that eventually destroys one's mind and body.

Braganza said that at home, it is the duty and responsibility of parents to give education and information to their kids about prohibited drugs.

"Tell your kids the right information in a proper way. Sometimes you can talk to your kids about drugs without really directly talking to him or her. Talk to them and maintain an open communication and allow them to express their feelings. Parents should set good examples", he stressed.

"If parents are not concern with their kids, then you are the last to know that your own child is using drugs, smoking marijuana, popping valium, drinking cough syrup or doing them all together", he added.

In a PMHA program over DXRP Radyo ng Bayan, PMHA staff Mart Obrero also reminded that parents should not just sit down and feel helpless the moment they know that their child is already a drug addict and should do something immediately to help their kids.

Police Officer Cochang Yambao-Suarez of PDEA also said that one of the best way to start is to find out what they (parents) can do to help their child and ask for help from drug centers or government institution with programs on prohibited drugs.

Suarez said PDEA, the PMHA, the local Drug Abuse Council, and the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council are all good sources that can provide assistance.

Mart Obrero of PMHA discussed the child's changing behavior once a kid is on drugs. A child who used to be obedient, kind and courteous become irritable, discourteous, defiant and aggressive, he said.

Persons who were neat and well-groomed become unconcerned with their grooming. They usually begin to wear dark glasses and prefer to wear long sleeves. Once healthy looking, they have become thin, emaciated and pale with lusterless hair, also explained Police Officer Yambao-Suarez. (PIA-XI) [top]
