BONTOC, Mt. Province (28 April) -- The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Mt. Province passed a resolution strongly endorsing Resolution No. 07-12 of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Benguet.
Resolution No. 07-12 is ĎA resolution requesting Hon. Jesli A. Lapus, Secretary, Department of Education to limit and synchronize school activities that cause suspension of classes and/or absences of students and teachers in the public schools so that students will concentrate in their studiesí.
As stated in the resolution of the SP Mt. Province, public officials, citizens and parents consulted on this matter signify their strong support to the resolution of the SP of Benguet, with the comment that only their activities having direct bearing on the improvement of learning and teaching should be given priority, just as other activities requiring the participation of a lot of students and teachers from each school can be done during summer months so that absences will be minimized.
In its resolution, the SP Benguet stated there are many school activities required by the Department of Education that suspend classes and/or cause absences of students and teachers.
To name a few: Sports activities -from district meet, there are about two to three days suspension of classes, for the provincial meet, there are about 5 days suspension of classes and same is true with the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association meet. Sometimes, participants are also excused from attending their classes to prepare for the sports competition.
Press conference, Damath/Science Fair/Quiz Bee, National Musical Competition for Young Artists, Student Technological entrepreneurship Program and other academic and technical skills competencies. Classes are suspended and participants are excused for attending these activities from district, provincial to regional level competition and sometimes up to the national level.
So with boys scouts and girls scouts activities and other extra-curricular activities. There are also seminars and conferences being attended to by the students and teachers which cause suspension of classes or absences of students and teachers.
These activities are usually scheduled on different dates which further causes more suspension of classes and absences of students and teachers which can be synchronized in order to lessen the suspension of classes and absences of students and teachers so that the students will concentrate on their studies and for the teachers to have more time teaching their students that would improve the quality of education, the local lawmakers noted.
