Commentary: Electorate has right to know their candidates
Tacloban City (April 29) -- No less than Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, Vice Governor Mimyet Bagulaya, Board Members Vangie Esperas and Malou Gosoco, candidate for congressman of the first district of Leyte, Atty. Clemencio and candidate for board member for the first district, Atty. Eric de Veyra attended the "Know your Candidates" Forum which was organized by the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, the Commission on Elections Regional Office 8 and the Philippine National Police Regional Office 8.
Many spectators expressed appreciation for the humility shown by the Provincial leadership in attending the Forum which was held at the Leyte Civic and Sports Center along Senator Enage St., Tacloban City on Saturday, April 28. They said that Governor Petilla's presence show his commitment towards achieving clean and orderly elections.
Some observers questioned the absence of several provincial and congressional candidates during the Know your Candidates Forum for the Leyte Provincial and Congressional candidates, saying that the electorate has the right to know their candidates.
Included in the Ten Commandments for responsible candidacy is for the candidate to run because he wants to serve the people and have the competence for the position he is running for and for the responsible voter to know the moral integrity, capabilities and other personal qualities of the candidates the voter will vote for.
In his welcome statement, COMELEC Director Adolfo Ibanez reminded the audience that there are only two instances when everybody is equal - the right to vote for the candidate of his choice and every one whether he likes it all not will die. He therefore exhorted the electorate not to waste this right to choose for the right candidates who will stir the province towards development.
The Forum which was preceded by the offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass presided by Rev. Fr. Alcris Badana who is the Archdiocese of Palo Social Action Director, was highlighted with the signing of the Covenant for Peaceful, Clean and Honest Elections which was witnessed by Rev. Fr. Alcris Badana, PNP 8 Representative Ruel Masong, Comelec 8 representative City Comelec Officer Corazon Montallana and PIA 8 Director Olive Tiu.
During the Forum, the candidates were given three minutes to introduce themselves and their platform. After the self introduction, the audience had the chance to ask their questions during the question and answer portion. (PIA 8) [top]
