Hypertension is leading cause of death in Negros Occidental
Negros Occ. (30 April) -- Hypertensive Cardio Vascular Diseases (HCVD) is the leading cause of death among the people of this province in 2006.
Records from the Provincial Health Office show HCVD claimed 1,618 Negrenses in every population of 100,000. Hypertension is followed by Pneumonia with 1,428 deaths, Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) 965, Diseases of the Heart 838 and Cancer 825.
Kidney diseases, injuries, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD), Diabetes and Septicemia (infection) were the other diseases included to make-up the top ten leading causes of death here.
PHO Medical V Jessica Fama said most of the 10 diseases listed could be prevented by having a healthy lifestyle.
A healthy lifestyle, she explained, is having proper diet that is low in salt, fiber rich, less in cholesterol and less intake of processed food.
Adequate physical activity and a clean environment also play a major role in maintaining one’s good health, she added. (PIA-LOL) [top]
