Hermosa TB council intensifies awareness drive

Zamboanga City (3 September) -- The Zamboanga Hermosa Tuberculosis Council has stepped up advocacy on the prevention and control of tuberculosis, as it undertakes various anti-TB initiatives.

Mayor Celso Lobregat, Hermosa TB Council chair cited the need for a unified and centralized TB control intervention program stressing that the disease remains to be a worldwide concern because of its consistent high position in both morbidity and mortality rates.

"Zamboanga City is one of the first cities that created an anti-TB Council in line with our campaign to prevent and control tuberculosis", Lobregat said during the culminating program of the Lung and TB Awareness Month held at the City Health Office conference room yesterday morning.

The culminating activity, themed "TB Kahit Sino, Kahit saan, Tutok Gamutan (DOTS) lang yan!", was highlighted by a singing contest among senior citizens and impromptu speech competition among students.

Lobregat said the city government is doing everything possible to heighten awareness on the prevention and control of the disease. He said the City Health Office under Dr. Rodel Agbulos is initiating activities in coordination with the Hermosa TB Council to reduce TB incidences.

Zamboanga City has been recognized for the improved cure rate from 86 percent last year to 92 percent this year.

Meanwhile, Dr. Agbulos said the creation of the Hermosa TB Council, formalized through Executive Order CL-130-2007 issued by Mayor Lobregat on March 23, 2007, is composed of multi-sectoral groups that are working for the prevention and control of TB.

The Hermosa TB Council initiated various advocacy activities such as lectures in schools while the health centers also have their own program of activities during the month in observance of the Lung and TB Awareness month.

The creation of the Hermosa TB Council is based on EO 187 instituting a comprehensive and unified policy for the tuberculosis controlb in the Philippines and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) memorandum circular 98-155 otherwise known as the Local Government TB control strategy enjoining the local chief executives to create an anti-TB task force in their respective localities.

Members are Councilor Lilia Nuno, chair of the Council committee on health; Dr. Jejunee Rivera and Dr. Bridget Cristobal of the ZCMC Medicine Department; Dr. Aristides Tan of the Center for Health and Development-Zamboanga Peninsula; Dr. Pascualito Concepcion of the Medical Sector (government organization), Mrs. Josefina Bue, nursing sector (GO); AGAPE and World Vision-non government organization; Dr. John Hernani Anacan-Public-Private Mix DOTS, Ciudad Medical Zamboanga; Dr. Josephine Gemarino- medical sector (private); Sheila Covarrubias-media sector; Dr. Mary Ruth Yanga- education sector; Pastor Bernie Yap-religious sector; Mr. Gil Saavedra- business and labor sector and Dr. Marvin Sebastian- civic (Rotary Club).
