Mayors league mulls support for mining projects

BAGABAG, Nueva Vizcaya (September 5) -- The League of Mayors in the Philippines (LMP) is set to issue a resolution supporting the entry of mining companies in the country.

Mayor Nestor Sevillena, president of the Nueva Vizcaya Mayors' League here said the Department of Foreign Affairs(DFA) through the Philippine ambassador to Germany during the recent LMP meeting in Manila has urged mayors to give their support to mining projects in the country.

"We were encouraged to support mining not to destroy the environment but as a means to recover and utilize our natural resources to improve our economy. The LMP is expected to issue its resolution on the matter," he said during the meeting of the mayors' league here.

Sevillena added that the DFA also asked the support of the mayors particularly on the information dissemination component of mining projects for its social acceptability requirements.

"Personally, I declined when I was asked to move for the crafting of the resolution because of the pending mining issue in our province," Sevillena said, referring to the stalled mining exploration in the towns of Kasibu and Quezon in Nueva Vizcaya. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
