Zambo mayor urges stop of illegal constructions on seashores in west coast
Zamboanga City (September 5) -- Mayor Celso Lobregat called Monday on west coast barangay officials to stop the construction of houses and other structures along the seashore saying it is illegal and consequently prohibited.
Speaking before officials from 18 barangays in the west coast during the forum on barangay fiscal administration held at the Ayala Sports Center held on Sept. 3, Lobregat said the seashore is part of the municipal waters and that any construction done is outright unlawful.
"It is the responsibility of the officials from the 18 barangays to stop the construction of houses and other structures along the seashore", he declared, stressing that such activities can never be legitimized.
Aside from being illegal, structures along coastal areas are prone to damage during bad weather conditions. Families residing along the shores are displaced whenever calamities spawned by heavy rains and big waves hit the city and the city government is obliged to provide the necessary assistance.
Meanwhile, the forum in Ayala was the third of a series this year. The first forum was held in Curuan covering barangays from the Vitali-Curuan districts while the second was held in Culianan and covered barangays falling under the Bolong-Manicahan districts.
The last forum will be held today and will involve barangays located within the city's 7 kilometer radius.
Lobregat first initiated the conduct of the fora when he first assumed into office in 2004 with the aim of bringing the local government closer to the people and to assist the 98 barangays in budget processingóboth the expenditure program and revenue collection campaign.
The participants in the forum yesterday were from the barangays of Ayala, Baluno, Calarian, Capisan, Cawit, Recodo, Sinunuc, Dulian Pasonanca, Labuan, La Paz, Limpapa, Maasin, Malagutay, Pamucutan, Patalon, San Ramon, Talisayan and Tulungatung. (PIA Z.C. / CIO) [top]
