PIA Press Release

Cebu City residents found more responsive in helping police maintain peace and order

Cebu City (5 September) -- The 'Text A Crime' Program of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has been found to contribute significantly to the more responsive attitude of the city residents in helping the police maintain peace and order.

P/Inspector Salde Gokotano of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) in this morning's Kapihan sa PIA on Crime Prevention Week Celebration rated the community's involvement in crime prevention and helping police maintain peace and order at 70 percent.

Gokotano said active community participation in crime prevention is very essential in preserving a favorable climate of peace in the locality. Sustaining a positive peace and order atmosphere is a shared responsibility and that each and every individual has a stake to make his community a better place to live in, according to Gokotano.

The 'Text A Crime' Program has been adopted for several years now and that this has led to a fruitful partnership between the law enforcement agency and the community by immediately notifying the police through text on various types of information on possible crime-related concerns.

Celebrating every first week of September as National Crime Prevention Week is also aimed at steering awareness on community involvement in thwarting crimes, Dept. of Interior and Local Government (DILG-7) Assistant Regional Director Lilibeth A. Famacion said.

The arrest of two members of the 'Meloy Garcia' criminal gang on the same day that the group held a bank robbery in Tagbilaran City last August 28 was cited as a case example of community participation that led to the successful apprehension of the gang leader and his cohort.

In the same incident, the police were tipped off by the beach resort's security guard where the two suspects hid while the driver of the van hired by the group also relayed to the police about his suspicious passengers where one was wounded due to a shootout confrontation.

Though Gokotano admitted that chances are huge that a flourishing economy follows an increased crime rate due to more tempting opportunities, the CCPO has likewise implemented the nightwatch program wherein office personnel are utilized for beat patrol during nighttimes in identified crime prone areas.

Cebu City being a highly urbanized metropolis only has about 1,000 policemen which is a dismal number compared to nearly a million residents while the city population rises in number during daytime as residents from nearby cities and towns are working in the city, this is learned.

With the weeklong observance on crime prevention, Famacion declared they are conducting seminars on crime prevention to generate community awareness and appreciation on the importance and value of crime prevention and foster interest and participation of the general public.

Other activities during the weeklong celebration include bloodletting, visit to the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center and Cebu City Jail.

This year's activities revolve around crime prevention as a global concern under the theme "Mapayapang Pilipinas, Masaganang Bukas." (PIA-Cebu/FCR) [top]
