Army's 902nd IB cited for support to AMMNBA rehab

by DM Maceda

Labo, Camarines Norte (5 September) -- "Grow a tree for Legacy". This is the theme of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) and its partners/stakeholders joint efforts for the rehabilitation of Abasig-Matogdon-Mananap Natural Biotic Area (AMMNBA) situated in Mt. Labo with an estimated land area of 20 hectares.

Last August 29, the officers and men of the Philippine Army 902nd Infantry Brigade headed by Colonel Carlos E. Luces together with the employees of PENRO headed by Elpidio Z. Orata, employees of Bulawan Mining Corporation, the Philippine National Red Cross (Cams. Norte chapter), Camarines Norte Water District (CNWD) and barangay officials of Bgy. Lugu conducted a tree planting activity at the vicinity of AMMNBA.

The tree planting site was just within the perimeter of the Camarines Norte Water District tree nursery, a two-hour hike and more or less 9-km distance from Bgy. Tulay-na-Lupa this town.

According to Orata the activity was in support to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo"s Green Philippines Program (GPP) to which the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) implements its Oplan "Twenty Million Seedlings Production Program."

It aims to reverse the trend of deforestation which threatens the remaining forest in the country and to address the climate change. "We are very much thankful for the participation of the different stakeholders in this noble endeavor particularly the Philippine Army", Orata said.

On the other hand, Col. Luces appreciated the initiative of the PENRO and the presence of participants from other government and non-government agencies whom he assured that the Philippine Army will always support to such undertaking as partner in the developmental programs of the government.
