Barangay tanod insurance program benefits 6,393 tanods in Negros Occidental
Negros Occidental (6 September) -- The Barangay Tanods Insurance Program of the Provincial Government, this province provides insurance to 6,393 tanods in the past six years.
The program started in November 2002, came into existence through a request by the Liga ng mga Barangay to provide life and medical insurance to the barangay tanods.
To date, 29 local government units have been served by the program except for the city of Bago and the municipalityof Ilog since both have their own insurance system for their respective tanods.
A total of P9,745,696 was claimed by 192 claimants for natural death, accidental death and medical reimbursement of the tanods.
There are 141 claimants for natural death with claims amounting to P7,025,000, 26 claimants for accidental death with claims totaling to P2,600,000 and for medical reimbursements, 25 have claimed a total of P120,696.
Total payment made to the insurer by the tripartite body composed of the provincial government, the city/municipality and the barangy was P11,862,532. The scheme for the contribution is 50 percent for the barangay, and 25 percent for both the city/municipality and the provincial government.
A maximum of 20 tanods in every barangay may be insured for a contribution of P34.50 per month for every insured tanod. The LGUs and the provincial government pay P8.625 each and the baragay counterpart is P17.25.
For natural death, insured tanods are entitled for P50,000 claim, P100,000 for accidental death claim while P5,000 for medical reimbursement.
The program aside from providing life and medical insurance to the tanods, it also aims to provide moral, social and economic assistance to the tanods and their families.
