Lapus applauds students for above-target NAT performance
Pasig City (6 September) -- Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli A. Lapus congratulates schools and students for having registered an impressive performance in all subject areas in the March 2007 National Achievement Test (NAT), surpassing the target the department has earlier set.
"Our teachers, school administrators, and of course our students have done a good job, and this hopefully will be the start of an upward trend for the years to come," Secretary Lapus exhorted.
Posting a mean percentage score of 59.94 percent in the 2007 NAT, an increment of 5.28 percentage points were recorded compared to the 54.66 MPS last year. The result was well above the two percent earlier set by DepEd's Bureau of Elementary Education.
Of great significance are the improvements in critical subjects such as Math, Science, and English where there was a marked improvement of 12 per cent over 2006 -- more than the target of 10 percent increase.
The National Achievement Test was administered this year to determine grade six pupils' achievement level, strengths and weaknesses, and to identify those who require remedial classes during first year high school.
"Kudos to our students who did a good job, but we should not overlook the fact that more needs to be done," Secretary Lapus stressed.
Results of this year's NAT significantly improved compared to those conducted in the past two years. This 2007 NAT results also revealed that a bigger percentage of schools are moving towards mastery – from 22 per cent in 2006 to 35 per cent in 2007. The results also indicated that the students' learning skills in all subject areas covered by NAT -- Mathematics, English, Science, HEKASI and Filipino -- are improving.
Secretary Lapus attributed the remarkable performance of public school students to the various educational reforms DepEd is currently undertaking. This includes Every Child A Reader Program that aims to make every student a reader by the third grade.
DepEd's Needs-Based In-Service Training Project provided training to teachers and school heads from schools which registered in the low mastery level as revealed by the 2006 NAT results.
Also, the School Improvement Plan put special attention on the specific need of schools and the students. This also contributed in improving the students' performance.
