PIA Press Release

Nation observes 13th national crime prevention week

Zamboanga City (7 September) -- "Crime Prevention: A Global Concern" is this year's theme as we celebrate Crime Prevention Week September 1-7 with the National Police Commission spearheading the week-long activities in coordination with other concerned agencies.

The NAPOLCOM gets the support and involvement of the PNP, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Justice, DepEd, Commission on Higher Education, local government units, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Bureau of Fire Protection, Non-Government organizations and other private establishments.

Kick-off ceremonies were held on September 3 which started with a Motorcade around Pagadian City after which the opening program followed at the City Gymnasium. NAPOLCOM Commissioner Celia S. Leones, Governor Aurora E. Cerilles and Mayor Samuel S. Co were among the guests of honor. PNP Regional Director Jaime G. Caringal also graced the occasion.

Highlighting the celebration was an On-the-spot Slogan and Skit Contest for high school students spearheaded by the Department of Education. Big cash prizes were awarded to all winners with certificates of participation.

A Police-community Ugnayan and a seminar-workshop on Crime Prevention & Concept in Combating Terrorism was held in Pagadian City (Sept. 3 & 4) and Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay (Sept. 5 & 6). TV/Radio guestings were also conducted for information dissemination in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

To maximize advocacy in schools and barangays in the region, the seminar-workshop will also be conducted in Dapitan City and Manukan, Zamboanga del Norte during the third week of September.

Activities culminate in Zamboanga City on September 7 with the Awarding of Plaques of Excellence to PNP Officers. Topnotchers in the PNP Entrance & promotional exams given on November 26, 2006 and April 29, 2007 will also receive special awards. Other awards will likewise be given to community members, criminal justice practitioners and non-government organizations for their contribution and involvement in crime prevention.
