Antique celebrates World Tourism Day

San Jose, Antique (7 September) -- Antique joins the rest of the International Community in celebrating World Tourism Day on September 27, 2007 with the theme "tourism opens doors for women".
World Tourism Day 2007 is an occasion to celebrate women's achievements in the tourism sector and stimulate continuous action in support of United Nations' 3rd Millenium Development Goal: Promoting Gender Equality and Women Empowerment.
This campaign is built to address the important role tourism can play in creating opportunities for employment that will help eliminate poverty in local communities in developing countries around the world.
In Antique, "Tricycle Festival" highlights this year's World Tourism celebration on September 22, 2007, said Florentino Egida, Provincial Tourism Officer. Tricycles will caravan from San Jose to EBJ Upland Development Center in Igbucagay, Hamtic- a promising mountain resort and a tourist hang-out along the highway going to Iloilo. Tricycles will be painted with designs depicting tourist destination/attraction of the province.
Prizes are at stake for participating tricycles with free 2 liters gasoline for the first 50 participants plus P200 boundary to 44 participants to be provided by the Provincial Government of Antique and other sponsoring groups.
Tourism symposium will follow at the EBJ Training Center stressing the important role of transport sector in tourism industry. There will also be topics on Women and the Community – Builders of Culture of tourism, said Egida.
"Unspoiled Antique Tour" will cap this years celebration where tourism officers and officials of 18 towns in the province will join the guided tour to Antique's unspoiled tourist destinations from Anini-y to Libertad on September 26-27. Learning and insights of this tour will guide tourism officers design their local tourism program, said Egida. (PIA) [top]
