20 couples join mass wedding on Sept. 22 in Tabuk

by L. Lopez

TABUK CITY (8 September) -- Some 20 couples will be married in a mass wedding on September 22 at the St. William's Parish here as part of the celebration of Family Week organized by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).

Program Coordinator Judith Puday of the PSWDO said couples who signified to be solemnized for marriage must first undergo Marriage Enrichment Counseling and Parenting Skills Enhancement seminar, as requirement.

Under Proclamation No. 60, the last week of September every year is declared Family Week and the last Sunday of the same month is Family Thanksgiving Day.

The theme for this year's celebration, is "Makulay ang buhay ng pamilyang matibay", giving emphasis on the role of fathers not only as heads of families but as care and attention giver to the members.

This year's theme also advances family ties and bond as key elements in establishing lasting relationship among members, the need to understand each other in making a family.

This is to give enlightenment to the traditional concept among Filipino families who mostly carry the paternal style of parenting, which gives due respect to fathers as heads but are supposed to have equal authorities with the wife.

Part of the weeklong celebration is the holding of an early morning radio program, "Erpat on Air" by fathers over Radyo ng Bayan with topics to improve and strengthen family ties, prevention of family violence, fathers as care givers and promoting family spirituality.

Government recognizes the importance of having strong and united families as primary factor against violence and disorder, being it to be the basic unit of society.

Aside from the marital union of man and woman as vested by law, government under the same proclamation pushes the need for a Christian relationship, hereby giving opportunity to unwed couples to receive the blessing of church marriage. (PIA Kalinga) [top]
