KIANGAN, Ifugao (8 September) -- Concerned with promoting education to the young, the Federation of Senior citizens here formally opened a community library here last September 5.

Speaking to about 70 senior citizens from the 15 barangays here, Juan Dait Jr., the Federation President said that the project was realized thru the efforts of the officers of the senior citizens in soliciting books and magazines here and abroad.

Dait commended the senior citizens who had been volunteering their services to realize the said project. "Even though the officers are old they still had the energy of putting up the said library for our students and the community to research or a place to read," Dait said.

The library which is located at the old presidencia building of the municipal government here will be managed by a senior citizen who will act as a librarian. Dait is seeking the assistance of the municipal government to allocate funds for the honorarium of the librarian.

Mayor Jonathan Cuyahon said the municipal government will support the noble d project of the senior citizens noting their voluntary activities for the good of the community. "I appreciate very much the initiative of our elders in trying to contribute their voluntary services for the development of our municipality," he said.

Cuyahon acceded to the request of Dait for the municipal government to convert old buildings into tourism historical assets. "We will see what we can do to preserve this building which is the first government building here," Cuyahon said. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
