Military, ROTC cadets join Greening program

BONTOC, Mt. Province (8 September) -- Elements of the 108th Community Defense Center (CDC) – Mt. Province headed by its Executive Officer 2nd Lt. Luisito Montemayor (INF) PA together with the cadets of the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College ROTC Unit have recently planted some 6,100 gmelina seedlings relative to the Greening Program of the government
Of the total, 5,600 seedlings were planted in an area of about three hectares at sitio Maliling of barangay Malegcong of Bontoc and the other 500 were planted along the river bank of the Chico river here.
Montemayor said these seedlings were provided by the provincial office of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The same groups also participated in the tree planting activity spearheaded by Engr. Delfin Aglit, OIC Provincial Irrigation Officer of National Irrigation Administration. The tree planting activity was conducted at Barangays Otucan and Bila of Bauko in connection with the Watershed Protection Program of the agency.
Some 5,071 seedlings of assorted non-fruit bearing trees and cuttings were planted in an area of about two hectares.
The twin efforts of the CDC and the NIA are also in support to the project of the provincial government of planting another one million trees to green the forests and idle lands in the province to help protect the environment.
Aside from the tree planting activity, the 108th CDC thru its organic personnel and the cadets of the MPSPC ROTC unit participated in the blood letting activity in celebration of the World Blood Donors Month last July. The activity was spearheaded by the Officer-in charge of the Philippine National Red Cross, Mt. Province Chapter Marcellus Diaz.
Montemayor reported that a total of 10,350 cc of different types of blood were extracted from 23 blood donors. The extracted blood are deposited at the Bontoc General Hospital and at the Luis Hora Memorial Hospital in Abatan, Bauko. (PIA MP) [top]
