100 scholarships await qualified dependents of OFWs

Tacloban City (September 8) -- This is good news for dependents of Overseas Filipino Workers. About one hundred scholarship slots await qualified dependents of OFW members who wish to enroll in any four or five years baccalaureate course for School Year 20082009.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Regional Office 8 through Regional Director Ma. Evangeline V. Filamor announced that it is currently implementing the Education for Development Scholarship Program, the deadline of which is October 31, 2007.

In order to be eligible to the program, the applicant must be a Filipino Citizen; not more than 21 years of age; be a High School graduate; and be in good health.

More ever, the applicant must be a beneficiary or dependent of an OWWA member. Beneficiary or dependent shall be limited to children of married OFWs or brother or sister of unmarried OFWs.

The applicant must submit the following documentary requirements to the OWWA Regional Office in his or her place of residence: an accomplished application forms (2 sets), including Forms 2 and 3; two copies 1"x1" ID pictures; proof of relationship to member, copy of birth certificate of applicant and of the member if related as brother or sister, duly certified by the Local Civil Registrar; Form of 137 or transcript of records; and proof of OWWA Membership as in Official Receipt of OWWA Contribution, E-Receipt or Certification from OWWA Membership Processing Center.

The applicant must pass the qualifying examinations particularly the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) National Examination and the College Admission Test of the school where she or he intends to enroll.

All the qualified applicants shall be selected and ranked according to their performance in the qualifying exam for the scholarship. The scholars shall be selected and recommended by the OWWA Scholarship Committee. The approval of the Administrator is final and unappealable.

Director Filamor said that the deadline for filing of application is on October 31, 2007. The date of examination is in December of 2007. She added that the grant is only provided once and is non transferable. Also, the scholar must be a recipient of other scholarship grants.
