Region 8 establishes regional ecology center

Tacloban City (September 9) -- Environmental Management Bureau Regional Office 8 Direct Letecia R. Maceda informed that the organizational meeting in preparation for the establishment of the Regional Ecology Center in Eastern Visayas was a success.

Director Maceda said that a follow up discussion of plans, activities and other important concerns for the Regional Ecology Center on September 11, 2007, 9:00 o'clock in the morning at the Ritz Tower de Leyte in Tacloban City.

One of the agenda during the meeting is the drafting of a Memorandum of Commitment to be signed by the Heads of partner agencies during the launching of the Regional Center sometime in November, Director Maceda said.

Republic Act 9003 prescribes the establishment of Regional Ecology Center (REC) in every Region, which shall provide technical expertise, information, training, networking services and coordinate Solid Waste Management mandates.

RA 9003 also mandates various government and non-government agencies to support the implementation of the said law and to be part of the Regional Ecology Center.

The government and non-government agencies which are considered as the partner agencies are the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Department of Interior and Local Government, the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Department of Health, the National Economic Development Authority, the Department of National Defense and the Philippine National Police; the Philippine Information Agency, the Department of Public, Works and Highways, the Department of Education, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the Eastern Visayas State University, the Rotary Club of Tacloban and the Pollution Control Association of the Philippines, Inc.
