Capiz lists tech-voc courses in education thrust

by A. Lumaque

Roxas City (10 September) -- The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority's (TESDA) Ladderized Education Program (LEP) has been included in the province's education thrust in the next three years.

This was revealed by TESDA following the province's strategic planning workshop late last month to define its strategic directions and priority programs until 2010.

"Included in their 10-point agenda is the development of technical-vocational education particularly the new LEP which TESDA advocates," said a TESDA news.

Capiz Gov. Victor Tanco, Sr. said the workshop is a first major consultation of the provincial government to validate its pursuit for development within the framework and spirit of Labi Sa Tanan ang Tawo (Above All The People) laid down during the inauguration and oath taking ceremony for provincial, city, and congressional elected officials last June 28 at the Capiz Gymnasium.

The province's education thrust activities will include the establishment of Information Technology Centers in some public secondary schools, improvement of the provincial library, continuation of the scholarship program, intensification of non-formal education, and collaboration with TESDA and Capiz State University (CapSu) for extension programs and vocational trainings.

A conduct of special professional summer enhancement program to enhance English and Math teaching proficiency in the elementary and high schools is included in the effort to provide quality education among Capiceņos.

The proposed provincial initiative to enhance teaching expertise in English and Math supports President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's optimism for excellence through better quality of education to more Filipino students.

The President's expectation was announced during her roundtable discussion with Math and Science champions in the international competitions.

She also cited during the discussion that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will receive close to 50-percent increase in its 2008 budget, from P3.5B this year to P5.5B next year.

This, in effect, will also allow a 68-percent raise in the budgets of the Philippine Science High School and other public science high schools in the country. (PIA) [top]
