Labason town observes world rabies day

By Abundio Puro

Labason, Zamboanga del Norte (September 10) -- The municipal government here headed by Mayor Wilfredo Balais has actively participated in the observance of world rabies day last Saturday.

Joining the said celebration were local pet owners who brought along their dogs to the municipal plaza for a free anti-rabies vaccination administered by livestock coordinator Julito Sabijon and rural health nurse Cecile Galea.

About 25 dogs were given anti-rabies vaccine that day.

Free anti-rabies vaccination spearheaded by the Municipal Agriculturist's Office (MAO) headed by Erlindo Fortich and the Municipal Health Office (MHO) is still going on to give chance to other pet owners have their dogs immunized against the dreaded disease.

Rabies virus causes an acute encephalitis in all warm-blooded hosts and the outcome is almost always fatal. It is transmitted when infected saliva of a host such as dog is passed to an uninfected animal.

When the virus reaches the brain, it multiplies rapidly and the infected animal usually dies within 7 days of becoming sick.

Mayor Balais also urged all pet owners to have their dogs vaccinated against the disease to make his town rabies-free. (MIO/PIA-ZN) [top]
