Federation of Leyte Women commends DAR
Tacloban City (September 10) -- The Leyte Federation of Women's Clubs, the oldest women aggrupation in Leyte, hailed the efforts of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in raising awareness to the fact that there are women farmers who are CARP beneficiaries, thus giving women stronger voice in the pursuit of rural development.
In Leyte, the 18,396 women farmer beneficiaries of CARP constitute more than 32% of the 57,243 total number of beneficiaries in the province.
In Biliran, the 2,067 women beneficiaries make up 37% of the 5,553 total number of CARP beneficiaries.
The same story is repeated in Southern Leyte where the women farmer beneficiaries account for 32%; in Eastern Samar where the women farmers constitute 42%; in Northern Samar where the women beneficiaries comprise 38%; and in Samar where the women farmers represent 32% of the total number of CARP beneficiaries.
The Leyte Federation of Women's Clubs noted that women farmers constitute 35 % of the total 135,132 Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program beneficiaries in Region 8 as of 2006.
The figures at the Department of Agrarian Reform Report indicate that of the total CARP beneficiaries in Region 8, about 88, 037 are male farmers while women farmer beneficiaries totaled to 47,095.
Did you know that this percentage of women farmer beneficiaries of CARP in Region 8, is higher than the national percentage of women beneficiaries which was pegged at 24% of the total 1,845,272 beneficiaries?
There are about 506,571 women nationwide, who are actual recipients of land title as a firm push to the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law of 1988 which guarantees equal rights to landowners and equal shares of the farm's produce.
It may probably be considered as a small step but it is still a leap towards giving women a stronger voice in the pursuit of rural development, for which the Department of Agrarian Reform must be given commendation.
DAR must also be cited for its effort to raise the recognition of women farmers as CARP Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries, which is gaining a milestone in the history of the Department of Agrarian Reform.
More so, DAR's conscious effort to ensure monitoring of the number of women Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries nationwide must be hailed as a conscious effort of raising the dignity of women and their role in nation-building and development. (PIA 8) [top]
