18 Negros inmates graduate from Pandan weaving
Negros Occidental (12 September) -- Eighteen inmates of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Kabankalan City graduated from their training in Pandan twisting and weaving under the Basic Skills Training Program of the local government.
The project is in coordination with the Alternative Learning System of the DepEd headed by Education Supervisor Bernadin Bendo and the BJMP.
The handbags made by the inmates from pandan leaves were displayed for sale at the social hall. Prices of the bags range from P100 to P300 to those with wood handles.
Mayor Pedro Zayco in his speech said that the project that gives the inmates skills that will help them earn a living once released from prison. The mayor also assured the inmates that their products will be displayed at the new showroom of the city.
Zayco revealed plans of constructing a new city jail with 12 cells at Sitio Overflow of Brgy. Hilamonan.
The proposed jail will have a separate cell for children and women, a multi-purpose hall and a sunning area. Zayco intends to realize the project before the end of his term.(Kabankalan/PIA) [top]
