Wellness industry does brisk business in Davao

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (12 September) -- There is a growing market for the wellness center in the Davao Region and the number of clients is increasing.

During the Davao Business Reports Forum on Tuesday held at the MediSpa in SM City Davao Rayenne Evelyn Arao, manager said that Spa visits has become a regular family event.

Citing their establishment, Arao said most of their clients are mothers and daughters and have noticed it as a bonding activity for the family.

She said the center is personally supervised by a skin specialist Dr. Vicky Patino-Guillano who is a board certified dermatologist, a diplomate of the Philippine Dermatological Society and the only dermapathologist in Davao, Guillano finished her subspecialty fellowship training at the National Skin Center in Singapore.

Mindanao Economic and Development Council senior economic specialist Ever Abasolo said operation of well centers here contributed to the shift in economic activities of the region.

He said services become the major contributor of the economic growth in Mindanao although he explained that services also include those in the agri sector.

Compared to the previous years where agri growth accounted for 45 percent he said it is no longer true today because agriculture is only about 36 percent while services is one percent higher or about 37 percent.

Arao meanwhile said that despite the investments that the company poured in they are more concerned on the quality of services.

She said they have therapists that were trained as far as Singapore, Thailand and Brunei who are qualified to undertake theraphy services that could reduce stress and tension.

The MediSpa she said offers a perfect balance of scientific and clinical treatments with ancient windows and alternative approaches to total skin and body care.

In a resort setting within the mall, Arao said that their ultimate goal for their client is to experience relaxation and tranquility.

The setting is a "Mediterrasian" (combination of Mediterranean and Asian designs) inspired health spa with sensible amenities and serene atmosphere.

Arao said they also would like to correct the misconception about Spa saying that the center is purely offering therapeutic services and nothing more.

She said they maintain clean and sterile facilities as well as secure and transparent area.

"Our prices are affordable and competitive. Although we have regular packages most of our clients go for customize services," she said.

She said majority of clients are women and the bulk of their "spa-goers" are those outside of Davao. (PIA XI) [top]
