NorMin gov't security forces on red alert over Estrada verdict

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (12 September) -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Northern Mindanao will always uphold the Sept. 12, 2007 verdict of the Sandiganbayan on ex-President Joseph Estrada.

Thus assured P/Chief Supt. Teodorico B. Capuyan, Regional Director of PNP-10, who said they have implemented security measures days before the verdict was handed down on the former President.

"Everybody is equal in the face of the law. Let us respect and accept the verdict of the anti-graft court. Likewise, let us stay calm and follow the rule of law," he said.

He further said "We will continue to maintain peace and provide security to our citizens until there will be no more signs of any activity that might disrupt the peace and order condition in region 10."

The PNP-10 Director, however, said there are no indications that mass actions for or against the decision will be held in the region.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Jose T. Barbieto, Commanding General of the 4th Infantry Division, Philippine Army, based in the city, said 4ID is on red alert to uphold the verdict of the anti-graft court.

"We will support PNP-10 in containing any mass action or any threat of terrorism that might occur relative to the verdict," Barbieto also assured.

Just recently, both Barbieto and Capuyan have signed a memorandum of agreement to fortify the maintenance of peace and order in their respective areas of responsibility (AOR) per Executive Order No. 546 issued July 4, 2006.

The said EO directs the PNP to undertake active support for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in the Internal Security Operations for suppression of insurgency and other serious threats to National Security amending certain provisions of EO 110 series of 1999 and for other purposes.

Pursuant to the MOA, both 4ID and PNP-10, through stronger coordination and partnership will further bolster the defense of the state against the lawless elements and the communist terrorists, the most potent threat to the peace and order in the region who continue to commit atrocities against the government and innocent civilians.
