Chavit to Erap: Accept verdict
Manila (13 September) -- Ilocos Sur Governor Luis "Chavit" Singson whose testimony in the jueteng payoff charges against his erstwhile kumpadre Joseph Estrada helped the prosecution build the case against the former President, expressed elation over the decision of the Sandiganbayan convicting Estrada of plunder. Singson, however, also expressed sadness because so many people suffered in connection with the case.
Singson said, "Masaya at malungkot ako. (I am happy and at the same time sad. Happy because we have been vindicated. I'm sad because many people have been affected by this case. Like my secretary Marlene Perez who was in-charge of coordinating with witnesses, she was killed by still unidentified persons)"
When asked if he had anything to say to his former kumpadre now that the verdict is out, Singson said, "Pare matatanda na tayo, (we're old) we're not getting any younger. (The verdict has been handed down. Let us accept it. Everyone else has already confessed. You are the only one left who has not confessed. Justice was no even rendered in full in your case. Just be grateful you were not sent to jail. You will just go on vacation in Tanay)." (PIA-MMIO) [top]
