Army all eyes on Comval

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (14 September) -- Philippine Army's 1001st Brigade Commander General Carlos Holganza during yesterday's Kapihan sa Kapitolyo bared the efforts being exerted by the military to Compostela Valley Province.

"Of the four other provinces being handled by the 1001st Brigade, Comval is considered the hottest," he said.

"That is because of the four mining companies that are operating in the said province. The NPA is active in areas where they could extract money.," he added.

Comval is home to the gold-rich Mount Diwata in the municipality of Monkayo where big-scale mining companies have been actively operating.

Mining companies are alleged to be biggest source of the NPA group's operational resources.

However, the military leader reported that there had been a significant decrease of NPA pursuits in his area of responsibility.

"That is brought by the soft approach we have implemented. We projected a new image to the people by making ourselves respected; not just feared," he said.

Holganza cited the different developmental projects being initiated by the military ithrough the support of other groups from the government sector, private, business, NGOs, and the academe.

Among the different projects that the 1001st brigade implemented are geared on education for the youth, livelihood of the community folks, health services, and many more. (PIA XI) [top]
