PGMA exhorts Filipino women to play active role in consumer awareness and protection

Tacloban City (September 14) -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo exhorts the Filipino women to play active role in advocating and enhancing consumer awareness and protection.

This is one way of revitalize the active role of women into the mainstream of development and nation building which is in line with the theme "Charting our Future for God, Country and Family."

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is the keynote speaker in the September 14 convention of women leaders dubbed as the Women's National Electoral Assembly 2007, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the granting of the Right of Suffrage to Filipino women which is considered a victory of women in their claim to full citizenship and national identity by their inalienable right to vote.

The organizers and the participants to the convention commended the President for finding time to be with her fellow women despite her hectic schedule and despite her multifarious tasks.

The opening program was started with a brief historical background on Woman-Suffrage in the Philippines.

The two-day convention also had as speakers during the afternoon plenary sessions, Speaker Jose de Venecia and Senate President Manuel Villar.

The second day will feature the speeches of Bishop Deogracias I˝iguez, Senator Loren Legarda and Senator Francis Escudero.

The highlight of the second day of the convention is the presentation of jubilee awards by Mrs. Julita C. Benedicto. The different sets of awards are the institutional awards to pioneer organizations in woman-suffrage, posthumous leadership awards to Filipino and American Leaders who led in the attainment of their Right to vote, Woman Suffrage Pioneer Legislators Awards, the Pioneer Educational Heritage Awards to the First Schools for Women and the Historical Heritage Award.
