Negros Oriental studes gain high nat'l achievement test scores

Dumaguete City (14 September) -- Grade 6 students in Negros Oriental who took the National Achievement Test (NAT) conducted nationwide last March, posted high scores in English, Math and Science subjects.

The NAT results showed that the highest increase compared to last year's mean percentage score was obtained in the English subject.

According to Dr. Virgilio Daliong, Education Supervisor at the Department of Education (DepEd) here, the current MPS in English is 60.36%, which is up by 8.50% from last year's 51.86%.

In Math, an increase of 4.28% in the mean percentage score was achieved, from 55.44% in last year's MPS to this year's 56.63%.

The total 17,261 total Grade 6 students in Negros Oriental who took the NAT this year did well in Science also, from 53.05% MPS in the previous year to the current MPS of 48.97%.

Nationwide, Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo congratulated the 1.6 million Grade 6 students who took the NAT this year for their outstanding performance.

The NAT results showed that the examinees from about 30,000 public elementary schools obtained a total MPS of 59.94% or 5.28 percent higher than the 2 percent increase envisioned by the Bureau of Elementary Education (BEE) of DepEd.

In the proposed 2008 National Budget, the government has allotted P1 billion for Math, Science and English trainings, P700 million for Math and Science equipment, P55 million for the new program of DepEd for the teaching of engineering science in high school level. (PIA) [top]
