Thousands crowd beaches to help clean up Tacloban coastline

Tacloban City (September 15) -- Spearheaded by the Region 8 Administrators League, thousands trooped to the Sahara Beach in Tacloban City in order to join in the coastal areas of Barangays 88, 89 and 90, under the REAL Service Outreach Program at 6:00 o'clock in the morning of September 15.

The volunteers were composed of students from various schools, barangay officials and their constituents, government employees from the various national line agencies and from the Leyte Provincial Government and from the Tacloban City government, members of the various media outfits in Tacloban City and even foreigners who are now in the City.

The Philippine National Police sent one of the biggest delegations with the officers and members and trainees all present to join in the clean up activity.

Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez was present to inspire and to thank the volunteers for helping the City of Tacloban's Limpiyo Tacloban program. He urged the volunteers to help sustain the cleanliness in the city by their example.

Land Transportation Office Regional Office 8 Director Raul Aguilos welcomed the volunteers from all walks of life who were at the assembly area even before 6:00 o'clock in the morning.

After a short briefing from the NGO partner, Nature Unlimited Outdoor Club, the volunteers were divided into three groups to pick up the non biodegradable wastes along the seacoast.

The volunteers covered the area stretching from the airport up to the MacArthur Park.

The Regional Directors aside from Director Aguilos were Director Abner Cabalquinto of the Philippine National Police Region 8, Director Teogenes Baluma of the Department of Health, Director Karina Rosa Tiopes of the Department of Tourism, Director Olive Tiu of the Philippine Information Agency, Director Rose Bacarra of NICA and Dir. Minda Llamas of the Bureau of Customs.

Many of the volunteers, it was observed have been joining in the Coastal Clean Up for many years already. Many of them already have a collection of the IDs being given every year to the volunteers. (PIA Region 8) [top]
