Tacloban City (September 17) -- In connection with the first Leyte Province Business Month in October, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has scheduled to conduct a Seaweed Forum on October 30, 2007 at the Kanhuraw Convention Center in Tacloban City.

Director Ernesto Hilvano informed that the Seaweeds Forum will bring together seaweed farmers, traders, exporters, processors and other stakeholders from the six provinces of Eastern Visayas to discuss the opportunities and challenges in the seaweed industry.

The Forum highlights the need for co-management in seaweed industry development, Director Hilvano said. It hopes to update the stakeholders in the latest developments affecting the industry and link seaweeds farmers to micro finance institutions.

Furthermore, Director Hilvano said that the Forum aims to constitute and unify seaweed farmers under one organization.

During the Forum Proper, Director Gil A. Adora, Asst. National Director of BFAR will introduce the Seaweed Industry Road Map and Future Directions. He will also present the seaweed industry situationer in Region 8.

Mr. Leo Rosario of Philnet will do the presentation of consolidated output during the provincial consultations while a seaweeds entrepreneur will discuss seaweed enterprise management.

The seaweeds market prospects will be discussed by Dr. Pilar Fontelar of the BFAR Central Office. This will encourage the seaweeds farmers to go into bigger seaweeds farming venture.

Microfinancing programs like that of the Landbank, Quedancor, Kaisampalad, DTI-SBGFC, Peace and Equity Foundation and DBP will also be introduced to the seaweeds farmers.

There is a bright future for the seaweeds farming industry in the Region, Director Hilvano said. (PIA 8) [top]
