Region 2 council announces nutrition achievers
Tuguegarao City (September 17) -- The Regional Nutrition Council (RNC) has identified the local government units (LGUs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) with outstanding contribution in the fight against malnutrition in the region.
This year's Green Banner Awardees are the province of Batanes; the municipality of Mahatao, Batanes; and Santiago City.
The most outstanding BNS in the region is Editha Sinagub of Barangay 4, San Mateo, Isabela.
Meanwhile, Cagayan maintained its status as a CROWN awardee. To win a CROWN, an LGU should be a Green Banner awardee for three consecutive years. If Cagayan maintains its CROWN award for the next two years, it will be presented the Honor Award. The Honor award is the highest recognition in nutrition given to an LGU.
According to Rhoroda Maestre, RNC Regional Coordinator, the various awards were based on the performance of the LGUs in their nutrition efforts. The winners were evaluated based on the efficiency and effectiveness of their nutrition programs.
"We look into the management of LGUs of their respective programs and the overall impact of these efforts in the community," Maestre said. It is worthy to note that in the said outstanding LGUs, the trend of malnutrition is decreasing.
The same criteria applies for the selection of most outstanding BNS. In addition, an examination among the BNS finalists was administered to test their knowledge on basic health and nutrition.
The evaluation of outstanding achievers in nutrition was conducted by the Regional Nutrition Committee chaired by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG and co-chaired by the Department of Education (DepEd). Other members of the committee are the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Health (DOH), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the National Nutrition Council (NNC).
