27th National Literacy Conference slated September 19-21
Cebu City (17 September) -- To highlight the Annual Literacy Week celebration, the Department of Education (DepEd), through its Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC) has scheduled the conduct of the 27th National Literacy Conference at the Grand Boulevard Hotel in Manila on September 19-21, 2007.
Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director General Conrado A. Limcaoco, Jr., who is a member of the Council, informed this conference is open to all government and non-government practitioners including those who came from the academe and the private sectors that implement literacy or continuing education programs.
Limcaoco said the conference, which carries the theme: "Functional Literacy for All: To Live Long and Live Well in a Healthy Philippines," recognizes the critical link between functional literacy and health status of the citizenry.
The conference, he added, helps identify health policies and programs that address health literacy needs of the population.
It, likewise, serves as a venue for sharing experiences among government and non-government organizations and the public in the literacy skills development and health literacy efforts of the government, Limcaoco further noted.
Among those who are scheduled to speak in the conference are: University of the Philippines (UP) College of Medicine Professor Dr. Jaime Galvez Tan, Nutrition Center of the Philippines (NCP) Executive Director Dr. Florentino S. Solon, DepEd’s Bureau of Alternative Learning System Director Dr. Carolina S. Guerrero and DepEd Secretary Jesli A. Lapus.
Each participant, however, will be charged with P5,000.00 as registration fee to cover for meals, accommodation, workshop handouts and other materials. Those who are interested are advised to contact Dr. Norma Salcedo, head of the LCC Secretariat at nos. 631-0590/631-0579 and 631-0567. (PIA 7) [top]
