Zamboanga City (September 17) -- Some P500, 000 worth of farming equipment were turned over to local farmers in line with the government's thrust to improve food production.

Mayor Celso Lobregat along with officials from the Department of Agriculture regional office spearheaded the turn over of the equipment during ceremonies held at the City Agriculturist Office in Tumaga last Thursday.

Assisting the mayor were Councilors Rey Candido, chair of the Council committee on Agriculture and Rudy Lim and City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat while the DA was represented by Constancio Alama, DA Regional Technical Director and Raul Ramon Bucoy, DA Agricultural Program Coordinating Officer.

The farm equipment were donated by the DA regional office to the city government for the use of local farmers. The equipment composed of 6 drum seeders, 2 hand tractors, 1 rice thresher and 1 rice mill.

Farmer beneficiaries were the Cabatangan Farmers Association, CARTIA from Ayala, Culianan Hybrid Rice Cluster Area Association, Manicahan Hybrid Rice Cluster Area Associatin, Curuan District Rice Cluster Area Association and the Vitali Irrigators' Association.

In his message, Lobregat urged the farmer-beneficiaries to maximize the use of the equipment in order to improve production as well as produce quality products.

He said the city government in coordination with the DA regional office is undertaking all initiatives to assist the farmers in their production capability.

Improved production would ensure sufficient food for the city, the mayor stressed.

"Agriculture is one of the priority programs of the city government under my administration", Lobregat assured.

As this developed, farmer beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the city government and the DA for assistance and support extended to them.

Francisco Esperat of the Curuan District Rice Cluster Area Association said local farmers appreciate so much the efforts of the local government and the national government in initiating programs aimed to promote the welfare of the farmers. (ZC CIO/PIA ZC) [top]
