Leyte joins nationwide Knock-out Tigdas 2007
Tacloban City (September 19) -- The Province of Leyte through the Provincial Health Office will give its full support to the follow up measles immunization nationwide dubbed as Knock-out Tigdas, 2007 which will be conducted from October 15 to November 15, 2007.
The province of Leyte is currently adopting a ten years plan to eliminate Measles, a vaccine preventable disease. Two mass immunizations have already been conducted, one in 1998 and another in 2004 with 95% coverage.
However, from 2004 to 2007, a pool of susceptibles has again built up thus the need for the follow up.
Dr. Linda Teresa Astorga informed that all nine to forty-eight months old children whose birthday falls between October 15, 2003 and January 15, 2007, will be given Anti Measles Vaccine.
Further, Vitamin A will also be given to six months to seventy one months old and deworming drugs for twelve months to seventy one months old children.
Dr. Astorga said the success of this measles elimination campaign depends greatly in successful social mobilization activities. Raising community awareness and ensuring its optimal involvement is crucial.
She is therefore appealing on the partners working for the welfare of children and the parents or mothers with babies under the above mentioned ages, to support Knock-out Tigdas 2007.
A one day orientation on Knock-out Tigdas, 2007 will be conducted on September 19 at the conference room of the Provincial Health Office at Candahug, Palo, Leyte, in order to enlighten the various stakeholders on the project, Director Astorga added.
The elimination of measles in the province of Leyte and in a bigger scope, the Philippines, depends on all the stakeholders, the local government units, the mothers, the caregivers and the community as a whole, she concluded. (PIA 8) [top]
