DOST Region 1 conducts 2nd consultative meeting in Vigan City

By Carlo P. Canares

Vigan City, Ilocos Sur (19 September) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Region 1 recently conducted its 2nd consultative meeting at the Ilocos Sur Science and Technology Center (ISSTC), this city.

ISSTC Director Ramon Sumabat, in his welcome remarks, enlightened the participants that the meeting was held to make their clientele aware of the department's programs and projects being implemented in the region and how small and medium entrepreneurs can avail of these to develop and improve their businesses.

The development of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is one of the priorities of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

"Recognizing the critical role of MSMEs in generating employment, earning foreign exchange and stimulating growth and development particularly in the rural araes, the President has refocused economic policies to support and sustain the growth of the manufacturing sector through the development of MSMEs," Regional Director OIC Ms. Elsa Chan said, citing President Arroyo's vision.

The DOST has added another program to help entrepreneurs, the Small Enterprise Upgrading Program (SET-UP), a nationwide strategy to encourage and assist MSMEs to adopt technological innovations to improve their operations, and thereby, their productivity and competitiveness. The industry sectors covered in this strategy are furniture; gifts and house decors; marine and aquatic resources; horticulture; metals and engineering; and food processing.

Ms Chan explained that in food processing, "assistance does not only focus on technology but tests of food because consumers nowadays are health conscious."

The 23 participants were asked about their concerns and needs as well as possible assistance in their respective businesses. DOST Ilocos Sur Provincial Director Engr. Armand Ganal said that the inputs of the consultative meeting will serve as basis of the DOST's assistance for the coming year.

DOST Region 1 expressed optimism that potential cooperators in Ilocos Sur will be provided with better services.

Also present during the consultative meeting were Engr. Ismael Gurtiza and Engr Felipe Andrada, provincial directors of La Union and Pangasinan, respectively. (PIA-Ilocos Sur) [top]
