PIA Press Release

Skilled workers needed in Saudi Arabia

by RP Escalante

LEGAZPI CITY (19 September) -- Skilled workers in Bicol, particularly those in the construction sector, who want to work in Saudi Arabia may take their chances in the two-day special hiring to be conducted by Eastwest Placement Center, Inc. (EWPCI) at the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) regional office here, on September 27 and 28.

DOLE Bicol OIC-Regional Director Ernesto C. Bihis said that the company urgently needs at least 450 skilled construction workers.

"Actually the Special Recruitment Authority (SRA) given to EWPCI is nationwide but I personally convinced its management to prioritize Bicolanos in their recruitment as part of the government's rehabilitation program for Bicol after the devastation brought by Typhoon Reming last November," Bihis explained.

Bihis had been coordinating with various recruitment agencies for the past six months to bring employers and recruiters to the region in order to help Bicolanos particularly those who lost their jobs after the successive typhoons that hit the region late last year. It can be recalled that about 133 establishments shut down in the region right after Typhoon Reming wreaked havoc in Bicol.

"This is our chance to recuperate. Because of the destruction brought by the typhoons we don't have enough jobs here, so let's send our jobless skilled workers abroad," Bihis said.

The job vacancies in Saudi Arabia are as follows: welders, pipe-fitters, pipe fabricators, millwrights, steel fabricators, steel erectors, riggers, EE, ECE, ME, and other mechanical categories and accountant. "The demand for Filipino workers continue to surge and we are glad that EWPCI listened to our plea to prioritize Bicolanos so let's all help and disseminate this important information," Bihis ended.

Meanwhile, with about 18 Jobs Fair organized since the decentralization of the DOLE regional offices in 2006, Albay DOLE provincial chief Hilarion 'Larry' Zaragoza, Jr. is now called as the Jobs Fair king of DOLE Bicol.

Zaragoza's label was pronounced by Director Bihis during the Regional Management Meeting held September 10 at the "Ernie Hall" of DOLE regional office here.

"Larry have been handling and organizing jobs fair since his appointment as EPD chief way back about 10 years ago. After our decentralization, he still scored the most number of jobs fair conducted by the provincial office. Indeed, he is rightful to the tag name," Bihis explained.

Records show that the DOLE in Bicol has conducted some 39 jobs fair since the agency started implementation of its decentralization program in 2006. "DOLE V still holds the record with the highest number of HOTs (390) during the Super Jobs Fair held last January. Larry, was again, the brains behind the Super Jobs Fair," Bihis said.
