LGUs urged to strenghten anti-rabies campaign

LEGAZPI CITY (19 September) -- The Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) in Bicol urges local government units in the region to strengthen the anti-rabies campaign in their respective localities.

DOH Bicol regional director Nestor Santiago said health units in the Bicol provinces have expressed alarm on the reported increase in human rabies cases particularly in Camarines Sur. The DOH in Bicol has recorded some 31 rabies cases in the region from January to August this year based on reports from the provincial health offices.

Breakdown by province, Camarines Sur reported the highest number with 16 rabies cases followed by Masbate with 6, Camarines Norte and Catanduanes with 3 cases each, Sorsogon with 2 and Albay with one case.

The DOH together with the Department of Agriculture (DA) urges the local government units to implement strictly the anti-rabies ordinances particularly on stray dogs and the construction of dog pounds as well as the provision of anti-rabies vaccines. (DOH/PIA) [top]
