DENR Basilan continues massive seedling production

By Rene V. Carbayas

Isabela City, Basilan (19 September) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-ARMM in Basilan has been engaging in a massive seedling production of assorted tree species in the province as part of the department's efforts of restoring the beauty and sustainability of Basilan's natural resources, despite the meager resources that the department is experiencing.

PENRO-Basilan has now accumulated some 18,707 potted seedlings with the completion of some 1,500 potted seedlings of assorted tree species in the month of August.

PENRO Information Officer Grace A. Lazaro said that 4,500 of the said potted seedlings were already distributed to the different line agencies, adding that the effort of the office is for the benefit of the present and future generations of the Filipino people.

PENRO Abdusakor T. Lutian reported that the PENRO and CENROs of Lamitan and Maluso municipalities were producing and maintaining planting stocks of 5,000 potted seedlings of assorted species in its respective nurseries. In addition, PENRO were also maintaining some 4,000 potted seedlings of Mahogany, while Lamitan maintains some 5,207 planting stock of Mahogany species. Maluso was able to distribute some 1,700 potted seedlings, while Lamitan distributed some 2,000 of theirs mostly to farmers and private individuals.

In line with its mandate of forest protection, Lutian reported that the area protected and foot patrolled has reached up to 17,871 hectares. He also noted that the department has also conducted information and education campaigns.

Moreover, the DENR in Maluso headed by Marietta R. Ladjiman has recently confiscated in Maluso 6 pieces of Lauan species with a volume of 144 board feet. No details of the confiscated logs were reported, but the new confiscated items add to the possession of DENR, which now has accumulated some 407.69 board feet of confiscated logs.

PENRO Lutian, however, lamented that the department does not receive any MOOE since January of 2007 to present. He said that the explanation given them by DBM was that DENR-Basilan's budget was only devolved by May already of this year, thus the budget for Basilan was not included in the financial program for the fiscal year.

For the moment, Lutian revealed that most of their emergency funding requests only went to mandatory obligations of the department, like electricity and other rentals. He said that DENR-Basilan's MOOE allocation before reached P100,000.00. (PIA-BASULTA) [top]
