Oro launches Inter-Dep't Sports Fest 2007

Cagayan de Oro City (20 September) -- THE City Government of Cagayan de Oro launched Friday, September 14, its year-round physical fitness program for city hall officials and employees.

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula made the ceremonial tossing of volleyball, signaling the opening of the various sports competitions that will be participated in by 17 city government teams.

During the launching ceremony held Friday afternoon at the City Hall grounds, Mayor Jaraula underscored the importance of a physical fitness program for city government workers as an effective tool to increase the workers' productivity.

Mayor Jaraula explained that taking two hours a week for the City Hall employees to engage in physical fitness activities will not deprive the public of the services from the city government. On the contrary, it will make them even more efficient in their jobs.

The city mayor believed that with a regular physical fitness program, City Hall workers will develop healthier bodies and thus reduce chances of incurring absences or tardiness due to sickness.

Mayor Jaraula added that aside from improving physical fitness, the sports program will also develop good character among city government employees.

"It is important that as we participate in the games, we will always carry with us the spirit of a true winner, whether we win or lose the game," Mayor Jaraula pointed out.

Earlier, Mayor Jaraula issued Executive Order No. 2007CGJ-025, ordering the conduct of a year-round physical fitness program for city government officials and employees through an inter-department sports activities.

The same order also stipulated the creation of the Mayor's Council for Sports, which is composed of Mayor Jaraula as honorary chairperson; Councilor Jerico Goldmar Ebabacol as chairman; Engr. Isidro Borja as vice chair; and councilors Adrian Barba and Ramon Tabor, City Administrator Griscelda Joson and City Information Officer Erwin Culanag as members.

Among the sports events that will be participated in by the city government workers are basketball, volleyball, dart, badminton, chess and table tennis. (Cagayan de Oro City IO/PIA-MisOrOccCam i-Net) [top]
