Negros Oriental to benefit from EU-funded project

by Rachelle Nessia

Dumaguete City (21 September) -- Next year, a European Union bank is set to allocate 11 million Euro dollars for the proposed Negros-Panay Island Community Base Project.

The said project will be implemented in the provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, Panay, Antique, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.

"The components of this proposal are infrastructure, livelihood and environmental reforestation", Fabre said.

He stressed that the success of the project's implementation depends on the local government unit (LGU). "If they will not provide counterpart funds for infrastructure, the project will not be implemented," he said.

Fabre said that so far, the local government units of Bayawan City and Sta. Catalina have signified their willingness to provide their counterpart funds.

Should the LGUs in the province decide to cooperate, the proposal will be fine tuned by October and Fabre's office will start conducting workshops. "And by next year, the project's implementation will start," Fabre added.

Former Governor George P. Arnaiz has been instrumental in the inclusion of Negos Oriental in the six pilot provinces for the Negros-Panay Island Community Base Project, he said.

Recently, Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has unveiled the environment agenda of the Medium-Term Development Plan (MTPDP), which she said the Cabinet approved for updating.

The President disclosed the agenda during the signing of agreement among four groups- including Toyota Motor Corporation- for the reforestation of the northernmost tip of the Sierra Madre mountain range in Peņablanca, Cagayan. (PIA) [top]
