18th Nat'l Statistics Month fete in Region 8 starts September 28

Tacloban City (September 21) -- The Regional Statistical Coordination Committee in Eastern Visayas announced that the opening ceremonies for the 18th National Statistics Month celebration will be on September 28, 8:00 o'clock to 11:00 o'clock in the morning, at the NEDA Regional Office Nol 8.

NEDA Director Buenaventura C. Go-soco, Jr. informed that this year's celebration banners the theme Statistics and Action: A Road to a Better Life Through the MDGs."

Director Go-soco added that the host for the Opening Program is the National Statistical Coordination Board.

In order to highlight the National Statistics Month's theme for this year, the Opening Program will feature presentations on the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals in Eastern Visayas.

In order to advocate the Millennium Development Goals, there will also be documentary and video presentation on Ozone Depletion and Global warming which are the components of the Millennium Development Goal No. 7 which states "Ensure environmental sustainability."

Director Go-soco added that another highlight during the Opening Program will be the launching of the Recognition Awards on Millennium Development Localization.

Through the Regional Statistical Coordination Board, preparations are now underway on the Region's various activities in connection with the celebration of the 18th National Statistics Month.

The celebration of the National Statistics Month is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month.

The observance of the National Statistics Month hopes to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society.

It also aims to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.

Further, Director Go-soco pointed out the National Statistical Coordination Board Memorandum Circular No. 002-07 enjoining all government agencies at the National and Sub national levels, academic institutions and the private sector to actively participate and support the National Statistics Month celebration.

Activities to be undertaken may be in the form of symposia, workshops, orientation seminars, exhibits, slide shows, and publication of statistical reports, indicators and other relevant information, among others, with particular emphasis on the theme and the agency's selected sub-theme if any.

Participating agencies are requested to display their own National Statistics Month streamers at their building fašade. (PIA 8) [top]
