Labo celebrates 207th foundation anniversary

by LV Lagatuz

Labo, Camarines Norte (21 September) -- The colorful celebration of the 207th foundation anniversary of this town was highlighted by the 9th Busig-on Festival successfully held September 1-9.

This year's celebrations, the most attended in the past nine years, was graced by Binalonan, Pangasinan town mayor Ramon N. Guico, Jr., the president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP).

In his message, Guico congratulated the Labo townsfolk for the achievements as he mentioned that Mayor Winifredo Oco, as one of the eight "Most Outstanding Municipal Mayors of the Philippines", is the recipient of the prestigious National Gawad Kalasag Award last month, and was elected as the LMP's First Cluster President for Luzon.

He also brought with him the crew of NBN Channel 4 to cover the said festival in the LMP's weekly TV program, "Lakbayin Natin ang Magandang Pilipinas."

"Through this festival, you can showcase unity and cooperation. It is a means of strengthening your identity as a people. It is a way of promoting your history, culture and the arts. It can open opportunities for trade and investments through tourism which is the goal of President Arroyo for Bicol," he emphasized.

Featured in this year's festival were Blessed Virgin Mary's icon exhibit, agri-fair, river games, marathon relay, triathlon, drum and lyre competition, cultural presentation, Busig-on quiz, street dancing competition, literary contest, and battle of the bands as well as passport processing conducted by the DFA Bicol field office.

Reprinted copies of the Busig-on comics and the production of the original manuscript of the Busig-on epic were also distributed.

Busig-on in the Malay dictionary is a coined word, which originated from a root word busig, which means water and on, meaning plenty. It is directly associated with the Busig-on River here, conferred to be the longest river system in this province, which literally generates plenty of water for the province.
