161 third-termer punong barangays in La Union can no longer run for re-election

San Fernando City, La Union (22 September) -- The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), La Union Provincial Office names the punong barangays from different municipalities who have served their three-consecutive term limits and are barred from re-election.
According to Alona Garcia, Local Government Unit Operations Officer II of DILG-La Union, some 161 out of the 576 punong barangays from the 19 municipalities and 1 city in this province, have served their third term of office and under the rule of law they are no longer allowed to run for the same position in the coming October 29 barangay elections.
However, DILG - National Barangay Operations Office (NBOO) Director John Castaņeda said that though these third termer barangay captains are no longer eligible to run for re-election, they are still allowed to run as kagawad or council members.
In a report submitted to DILG Secretary Ronaldo Puno, Castaņeda said that out of the reported 39,145 punong barangays throughout the country, some 9,642 barangay captains excluding those of Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) are now on their third consecutive term of office.
On the other hand, DILG Undersecretary for Local Government Austere Panadero urged those barangay captains who are still eligible for reelection and those who wish to run as kagawad or council members to be early in filing their certificates of candidacy at the Office of the Election Officer in their respective cities and municipalities from September 29 to October 18, 2007.
