DepEd secretary to sign MOA with RAFI on school rehab

By Minerva BC Newman

Cebu, Philippines (24 September) -- The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) turns over to the Department of Education (DepEd) a newly constructed school building in Barili on September 28, 2007 with DepEd secretary Jesli Lapus, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia and RAFI president Roberto Aboitiz gracing the affair.

RAFI said that the newly constructed high school building was formerly known as Bolocboloc National High School however, the foundation rebuilt and constructed it in memory of the late Teotimo A. Abellana Sr., an employee of RAFI for 37 years until his death in 2003. The school is now called Teotimo A Abellana Sr. Memorial National High School (TAASr. MNHS).

Immediately after the turn over ceremonies, secretary Lapus, Governor Garcia and Ramon Aboitiz will ink a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the continued phase and expansion of RAFI's School Repair and Rehabilitation Project.

The MOA hopes to cover more schools, more municipalities and more partnerships from various stakeholders. In partnership with the DepEd, RAFI envisions to replicate the project in other areas of the country.

According to RAFI, the foundation has repaired and rehabilitated about 246 classrooms in 69 schools since 2004 and by the end of this year it will complete the repair/rehab of 17 classrooms in 6 schools within Cebu province.

With this project, RAFI and its partners aim to provide school children with a safe and conducive learning environment that would contribute to the improvement of the quality of education specifically at the countryside. (PIA-Cebu) [top]
