Bacolod council offers assistance to flood-affected communities

Bacolod City (24 September) -- The non-stop and heavy rains for two weeks due to the Southwest Monsoon known as "Habagat" brought flooding to the different communities here.

Areas that are most particularly affected are Puroks Kawayan, Katilingban and Riverside all of Brgy. Banago and Sta. Clara Subdivision of Brgy. Manadalagan. This is based on the report from the City Disaster and Coordinating Council.

Executive Assistant City Disaster Coordinating Council Joemarie Vargas attributed the flooding in the areas to factors like strong waters rushing out of the drainage, tide and fish ponds surrounding the areas which aggravates the situation.

Vargas said that there are 300 houses in the Purok Kawayan and Katilingban, while in Purok Riverside there are around 500 houses that were affected.

Trucks and rescue groups have been fielded by the city government to the areas to evacuate those who wanted to seek shelter.

According to Vargas, there is nothing much that can be done against force of nature but the city is doing its best to ease-out the flood water.

Meanwhile, the local government of Bacolod through the Department of Social Services and Development has given monetary assistance to victims of a twister (Buhawi) that hit Brgy. 1, this city recently.

The public is advised to call 117 for emergency situation that may arise during the rainy season. (PIA/EAD) [top]
