Samar BFAR intensifies mussel meat sampling

Tacloban City (24 September) -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Samar has intensified its collection of mussel meat samples for laboratory analysis.
This came in the wake of Red Tide toxin threat afflicting the Sorsogon Bay area.
BFAR chief Rolando Ay-ay said that because of the proximity of Samar to Sorsogon, it is best to take precautionary measures; sampling is done frequently to ensure that Red Tide toxins have not 'travelled' to Samar sea yet.
The Mussel Industry in Samar has been a reliable source of income for more than a thousand families in the coastal towns of Samar.
However, Ay-ay admitted that only the central office can declare an advisory as regards to the safety of consuming mussels. Their job, he said is to provide regular mussel meat samples to the regional office. In turn BFAR 08 subjects the meat samples to a laboratory examination and sends the report to the Central office.
Just recently, BFAR Samar held a seminar on Methods of Water and Meat Shell Sampling to mussel farmers in Jiabong, Tarangnan, Catbalogan and Villareal-the municipalities where mussel has become an industry.
There were even two Davaoenos, added the fishery chief who showed interest and joined the seminar. Ay-ay said the two from Davao are involved in the mussel industry
The seminar was done, said Ay-ay to closely monitor the presence of Red tide toxins in the area.
As of this writing, the latest bulletin has declared that the mussels in Samar are safe for human consumption, the fishery expert said. (PIA-Samar) [top]
