By Minerva BC Newman

Cebu, Philippines (24 September) -- The regional, provincial and city/municipal councils for the welfare and protection of children and the different NGOs in Cebu are all set for the celebration of children's month in October this year with various activities already lined-up and prepared for the special event.

The Regional Sub-committee for the Welfare of Children (RSCWC) is evaluating the finalists of the child friendly cities and municipalities for the regional and national awards. It will also coordinate with other councils in Cebu for a consolidated opening salvo on October 1, 2007.

The highlight of the celebration is the "Halad sa Kabataan" program of the Cebu Provincial Committee on the Welfare of Children (PCWC) that will hold the Children's Rondalla and Children's Vocal Solo competition on October 9 at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Provincial Board member Agnes Magpale who chairs the SP committee on women family and children said that the Rondalla and the Vocal Solo contests have 12 participants each; 2 contestants representing each of the six congressional districts within the province that will vie for trophy and cash prizes.

According to the organizers, the Rondalla groups shall be composed of a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 15 members that are not more than 17 years old on the day of the competition.

The competing groups shall perform together to the tune of "Mabuhi" as an overture before the competition proper while the official contest piece shall be the Cebuano tune of "Handurawan," a piece composed by Ray Castaneda and arranged by Basilio Reyes.

A warm up piece in Visayan tune shall be performed before the contest piece and to complement the Visayas motif of the contest, rondalla members shall also don Cebuano attire.

Winners for the rondalla contest shall receive a trophy and cash prizes of P25000 for the 1st prize and P15000 and P10000 for the 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. Non-winners will also receive a consolation prize of P3000 per group.

Contestants to the Children's Vocal Solo competition on the other hand must be from 7 to 12 years old on the day of the competition and songs to be performed shall be Cebuano songs with slow tempo or the so-called "Kundiman" category.

Accompaniment shall either be live or canned (on tape, MP3, CD, VCD or DVD) and costumes should be Cebuano-inspired that will highlight the best features of the contestant as a child performer.

Winners for the singing contest shall receive a trophy, cash prizes of P3000, P2000 and P1000 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively and scholarships from the Cebu Center for Pop. (PIA) [top]
