Outstanding volunteers sought

Davao City (25 September) -- Heroes have long been buried to rest but the crop of present-day volunteers are keeping the fire of public service burning.

The 2007 Search for Outstanding Volunteers seeks to recognize exemplary works of individuals and groups which have been working in the name of service through volunteering.

The Social Development Committee (SDC) under the Regional Development Council (RDC) 11 has just made the regional level search spearheaded by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) 11.

Six have been nominated for the individual category and only one for the group category.

Antonio C. Arañas of the Tagum Cooperative and Alma Lim-Uy of the Tagum City Council of Women are contenders from Davao del Norte while Librada Bolicio, Isulde M.Loren, Editha C. Mejias and Johnny C. Oquina, all of the Tinubdan Inc. are from Davao City.

The Emergency Action for Good Leadership Service (EAGLES) based in Toril, Davao City, is the lone contender in the group category.

Noel E. Quiratman, SDC secretary hopes to see more individual volunteers and group volunteer to join the search "so their efforts would be recognized' and their works be emulated.

The regional search for outstanding volunteer is in line with the national search conducted by the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) which is the national government's focal agency in celebrating the National Volunteer Month in December.

Through Proclamation Number 55 series of 1998, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared December each year as National Volunteer Month (NVM).

Meanwhile, the United Nations through General Assembly Resolution No.40/212 declares every 5th of December as International Volunteer Day. (PIA XI/JMDA) [top]
