Tourist transport operators given 45-day compliance requirement

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (25 September) -- Transport operators in the Davao Region servicing tourists are given 45 days to comply with requirements after the government briefs them on laws covering the transport conveyances for visitors.

Department of Tourism (DOT XI) regional director Sonia Garcia at Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City's Café Rysus said they work closely with other government agencies like the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to continuously upgrade services offered to visitors in the city.

She cited that in Cebu City all hotels and transport service must have a franchise before they can operate.

The move she said is to caution major problems especially when accidents happen involving vehicles that carries tourists that they are properly protected.

"We make sure that transport operators are properly recognized by government," she said.

Davao City according to LTFRB spokesperson Edgar Violan has only 23 accredited tourist transport service operators.

He said many similar type of tourists' services are plying here but remain unregistered.

"That is why come October 16 we will have to implement the law and apprehend those operating without proper accreditation," he said.

LTFRB Circular 2006-058 has lifted the moratorium of accepting application/petitions for new franchises and was reclassified to include corporate transport leasing services that is a sub-classification under Rent-A-Car.

Vehicle types include four-door Sedan, Van, SUV, Pick-up and Limousine.

Garcia said so far Davao City has one tourist bus the LCC Liner although Metro Shuttle is working on its application while the Philtranco is the one that caters to tour packages around the country.

Garcia also said that proper accreditation will assure the tourists that they are properly covered with policies like insurance aside from the assurance that their travel is safe with accredited transport service.

The vehicles will be issued rainbow plants so that from afar it gets easy distinction that there are tourists on board.

The application will be considered once the operator gets approval from the DOT. (PIA XI) [top]
