2007 NSM celebration to highlight UN's declaration of MDG

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (26 September) -- Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will address the United Nations General Assembly in New York and meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, this week.

While there, the President will participate in a forum of global leaders and the Clinton Global Initiative to discuss some of the world's most pressing challenges, such as, energy and climate change, global health, poverty alleviation and education.

Also included in her itinerary is a meeting with the different US business groups, the Filipino community and officials of the Millennium Challenge Corp. which oversees the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA)

Meanwhile, this year's celebration of the National Statistics Month (NSM) in October will highlight the importance of the UN's declaration of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) with an over-all theme "Statistics and Actions: A Road To a Better Life Through the MDG's,"

The MDG is a set of development goals and targets in eliminating extreme poverty and hunger worldwide by year 2015 which the Philippines adopted to do and signed along with the other UN-member countries in September 2000, Regional Director Myra V. Balandra of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), region 10, said.

There are eight (8) targets of the MDG: eradicate poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, increase access to reproductive health services, halt and begin to reverse the incidence of malaria and other diseases and provide basic amenities.

Thus, the National Statistical Coordinating Board (NSCB) has urged all heads of departments, bureaus, offices and instrumentalities of the national government, government-owned and controlled corporations, state universities and colleges, local government units and the private sector to actively participate in and support the celebration of the NSM which is now on its 18th year.

The declaration of October as NSM is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 issued Sept. 20, 1990 is aimed to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society and to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.

Activities for the NSM include the conduct of symposia, workshops, orientation seminars, exhibits, slide shows and publication of statistical reports, indicators and other relevant information with particular emphasis on the theme and the agency's/region's selected sub-theme, if any.

In Northern Mindanao, the Regional Statistics Coordinating Committee (RSCC) has included in its month-long NSM activities cookfests on G4 (Garden of Go, Grow and Glow) foods, a practical solution to malnutrition, not only for children but also for grown-ups.

Other activities are Poster-Making and Electronic Essay and Oratorical Contests, Blood Letting, Jobs Fair, livelihood/skills training for street children, statistical quiz on air, Basic Statistics Training, Forum on the MDG's, Statistical Olympiad for High School Students and launching of a National Statistics Information Center (NSIC) in the region.
